Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about using Classly.
Getting started
Can I start from my current attendance percentage instead of 100%?
Yes. If you start using Classly mid-semester, the app only knows about the classes since you installed it, so your first class shows 100%. To continue from your real attendance, enter what you've had so far:
- Open Insights → Can I miss? (called Subjects in Classly 3.2).
- Find the subject and tap Update Counts Manually. It needs Classly 3.2 or later, so update the app if you don't see it.
- Enter Classes Held and Classes Attended so far, for example 40 and 26 for 65%.
- Say whether those totals include today's classes, then tap Save.
Classly now shows 65%, and every class you mark is added on top. Attend the next class and it shows 27/41 (65.9%). Miss it and it shows 26/41 (63.4%). Can I miss? also tells you how many classes in a row you need to get back to your target, which is 16 classes to reach 75% in this example.
Only know your percentage? Check your college portal or attendance register for the number of classes held. If you only have an estimate, multiply it by your percentage: 40 classes × 65% = 26 attended.
Do this for each subject. When you add a subject mid-semester, you can set its start date to today. The counts cover everything before that. Days covered by the counts are locked in the Calendar, and you can undo it any time with Remove manual counts on the same screen.
Why do I enter class counts instead of a percentage?
The same percentage can mean very different things. 65% could be 13 of 20 classes or 65 of 100. To reach 75%, the first student needs 8 classes in a row and the second needs 40.
With the real counts, Classly can tell you exactly how many classes you can miss or need to attend.
How do I add my timetable?
Add each subject from the Subjects tab with its days, times and room. If you already have your timetable as a file, tap the Import Timetable button at the top of the Subjects tab to paste or upload JSON or CSV, preview it, and import.
You can replay the walkthrough any time from More → Setup Guide.
Can each subject have a different attendance target?
Yes. Every subject has its own target, set when you add or edit the subject. Insights compares each subject with its own target.
How do I change my semester's start or end date?
You can change the dates at any time. Nothing you have marked is deleted.
- Open Insights → Overview.
- Scroll down and tap Semester Parameters.
- Tap End Date and choose the new date. To change both, tap Start Date: after you choose it, Classly asks for the end date too.
The change is saved straight away, and your percentages and "Can I miss?" follow the new dates.
Semester already over? Overview shows a Change End Date button at the top. Choose a later date to keep tracking.
A semester can be up to one year long. Starting a different semester? Use Start New Semester instead. That clears the current subjects and attendance, after saving a copy in More → Semester Backup → Previous Semesters.
Attendance
How is my attendance percentage calculated?
It is the classes you attended divided by the classes you marked as present or absent. Classes you haven't marked yet, cancelled classes and holidays are not counted.
If you entered manual counts, they are included in both numbers.
What does "Can I miss?" tell me?
For each subject it shows how many more classes you can skip and still stay at or above your target. If you are already below the target, it shows how many classes in a row you need to attend to get back.
Tap Simulate to try out future classes before you decide.
I forgot to mark a class, or marked it wrong. How do I fix it?
Tap the calendar icon at the top of the main screen to open Calendar, pick the day, and change the class. Attendance updates instantly.
Days covered by manual counts are locked. To change them, update or remove the manual counts for that subject.
A class was cancelled, or the college had a holiday. What should I do?
Mark the class as Cancelled, or mark the whole day as a Holiday from Today or Calendar. Neither counts against your attendance.
How do I add an extra class or change one day's timetable?
Open Calendar and pick the day. You can add an extra class, change the time for that day only, or use another day's timetable. Your regular weekly timetable stays the same.
My timetable changed from a certain date, even a past one. How do I update it without changing earlier weeks?
Open the subject in the Subjects tab, change its weekly days or times, and tap Save Changes. Classly then asks Apply updated timetable from: pick the date your new timetable started. It can be a date in the past.
Weeks before that date keep the old timetable and the attendance you marked; from that date on, the new timetable is used. Do this for each subject whose timetable changed.
If your whole timetable changed, you can also re-import it with Import Timetable and choose the date it applies from.
To change a single day only, see How do I add an extra class or change one day's timetable?
Reminders
I'm not getting class reminders.
Check More → Notifications first: you can turn the reminder before each class and the prompt to mark attendance on or off, and choose how early they arrive.
Also make sure notifications are allowed for Classly in your phone's settings. On some Android phones, battery saving can delay reminders, so allow Classly to run without battery restrictions.
Your data
Is Classly free?
Yes. Every feature, including Google Calendar Sync and the Home Screen widget, is free. There are no ads.
Do I need an account or internet?
No. Classly works fully offline and has no accounts. Internet is only used if you connect Google Calendar Sync, and for anonymous crash and usage diagnostics.
Does Classly use my location?
No. Classly does not request location access. Rooms and buildings are saved as text.
Can I move my data to a new phone?
Yes. The easiest way is Google Drive backup: open More → Semester Backup and tap Connect Google Drive. Classly then copies every backup to a hidden folder in your Google account that only Classly can see.
On the new phone (Android or iPhone), install Classly, tap Used Classly before? Restore a backup on the welcome screen, then Restore from Drive and sign in with the same Google account.
You can also create a backup in More → Semester Backup, save the file somewhere safe and import it on the new device. Without either, uninstalling Classly removes your data, because it is kept only on your phone.
What does Google Calendar Sync change in my Google account?
It creates one dedicated Classly calendar and publishes your classes to it. It does not read or change your other calendars. Turn it on from More → Google Calendar Sync.
