How many classes can I miss in a semester?

Updated: 2026-10-15

At a 75% target, you can miss at most 25% of the classes actually held; a 15-week course meeting three times weekly allows 11 absences out of 45.

Start with the real number of classes

Estimate total classes as teaching weeks × classes per week, then subtract holidays, reading days and known cancellations that remove a meeting. If a 15-week subject meets three times weekly, the starting estimate is 45. If three meetings will not take place, use 42.

Next multiply by the share you are allowed to miss. At a 75% attendance target, that share is 25%, or 0.25. Always round the permitted absences down because a fraction of a class cannot be missed safely.

maximum absences = ⌊ total classes × (1 − target) ⌋

The 45-class row illustrates rounding. Twenty-five percent of 45 is 11.25, but missing 12 would leave 33 attended out of 45, or 73.33%. Therefore the safe maximum is 11 and the minimum attendance is 34.

Adjust for holidays and cancellations

Suppose the three-times-weekly course loses three meetings. With 42 held classes, a 75% target requires at least 32 attended, allowing 10 absences. A cancellation does not give you an extra absence: it removes a class from both the possible attended total and the semester total.

Extra and make-up meetings can move the total in the other direction. Update the plan whenever the official timetable changes instead of relying on the estimate made in week one.

Your remaining allowance changes during the semester

The semester maximum is useful for planning, but your current allowance depends on actual attendance. If 20 classes have been held and you attended 18, a 75% target lets you miss 6 more at that moment: 18 ÷ 24 is exactly 75%. If you attend more first, you build more room. If you miss one, the allowance falls.

Calculate from the record, not by subtracting absences from an old plan. The exact formula is attended × 100 ÷ target − held, rounded down.

Check how your institution counts

A course may count meetings, hours, laboratory periods or components separately. A two-hour laboratory might count as one meeting in one system and two hours in another. Some policies apply the target per subject; others impose additional requirements for practical work. Use the same unit in every input and verify it against the official record.

Plan responsibly

The maximum is a boundary, not a recommended number of classes to miss. Staying above it gives you flexibility when an unavoidable absence happens near the end of term.

Example: planning with a safety buffer

Imagine a subject scheduled for 42 meetings after known holidays. At 75%, the mathematical maximum is 10 absences because you must attend at least 32. Planning to use all 10 leaves no room for an unexpected extra meeting, an attendance correction or a stricter component rule. If you reserve two of them for emergencies, your personal planning limit becomes 8 even though the mathematical boundary remains 10.

After 18 meetings, suppose you attended 16. Your current rate is 88.88%. The remaining semester plan should start from 16 attended and 18 held, not from the original allowance. You can currently miss 3 in a row and remain at 16 of 21, or 76.19%. Attending more classes first will rebuild the margin.

When the timetable is uncertain

Create a low and high estimate for the number of remaining meetings. Use the smaller total when asking whether you can recover, because fewer opportunities make recovery harder. Use the larger plausible total when testing how many future absences you could tolerate, and recalculate once the timetable is confirmed.

Common questions

How many classes can I miss in a 15-week semester?

At 75%, the answer ranges from 3 for one class weekly to 15 for four classes weekly, before holidays or cancellations.

Do cancelled classes reduce my absence allowance?

Usually they reduce the total classes held, so recalculate using the meetings that actually take place.
